Flash Fiction #140 – Presents

Suyin sits close to the fire as her little boy rips open his presents. His delighted squeals make the hours at the factory worth it.

Feng halts when he gets to the gifts with his father’s name.

Suyin sucks in her breath; Hai abandoned them years ago; her heart breaks as her son touches these presents reverently. It’s clear he’ll remember this day forever.

His face is aglow as he opens them.

“Father knows me so well,” he says.

Suyin smiles. She hopes he’ll never know she is the one who bought him these presents.
