Flash Fiction #209 – Peng’s Fourteenth Birthday

“Mom!” Peng smiled. “Father has invited me to his home for my birthday!”

Suyin’s eyes darkened. “You already have plans.”

“You just don’t want him to see me!” Why else would his father miss his games? Never take him fishing? Miss his birthdays? It was the only explanation.

Peng took the invite and his father ignored him.

Upon learning his grandmother invited Peng,

he ran home.

His father never went to his games

or took him fishing,

but someone did.

His mother.

And now she was home alone with his birthday cake.
