For days, Carla lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. She thought she was over the contentious divorce… until she awoke and it was November; the holidays were coming. She hugged her pillows tightly, thinking about Doug’s family; she missed them, his mom specifically. But that was over. She was all alone again.

Her landline rang, and on the other line was her ex-mother-in-law. “Carla, why haven’t you called me about Thanksgiving?”

“Because of the divorce.”


“Honey, you and Doug divorced. But you can’t divorce family.”
