Flash Fiction #251 – She Follows

He just meant to dunk her! He leaves her floating in the waves.

Wherever he runs, Moana follows.

She smiles at him from crowds in Chicago. He watches a Shakespeare play in New York and it’s her wheezing for her life, not Desdemona. He opens a fortune cookie in LA. “Soon,” it says. Moana follows him in nightmares. Each time, he barely escapes his pillows unsmothered.

He moves to a little town, where his cop neighbor says, “Moana wanted to say hi, too.”

Only when he turns himself in does Moana depart.
