Flash Fiction #30 – The Devil You Know

Millions dance as the city crumbles.

A fire on every street.

The ground quakes from the falling buildings.

It’s a celebration, they say.

Capitalism, the failed experiment, dies.

Skyscrapers worldwide lose their place in the heavens.

As a historian, I’m afraid.

Societies start with the best of intentions,

but those in power

will grow into unrecognizable creatures.

Wielding such power tends to corrupt.

What new buildings will they resurrect

to bring us down?

Better the devil you know

than the devil you don’t.
