The star engulfed the planet in flames–
this was the end.
The planet knew death.
It had endured the extinction of every species
that had called it home.
It knew these flames
of its former star
were to be its own demise.
These rays had supported life, ages ago,
before they bled the planet dry–
sucked up its hydrogen and oxygen,
leaving it barren.
The solar system ruiner,
eating one of its planets,
then another.
Now it was Earth’s turn.
No friendship is forever, not even one with a star.
