Flash Fiction #80 – The Last Light of Texas

Flash Fiction #80 – The Last Light of Texas

The solar power lamp post’s warranty promised 10 years,

but it has lasted nearly double.

It hums with life, promising many more.

A power plant fire blackened it many years ago

and yet it outlived all other human technology.

One by one, the lights of Texas dimmed and died.

Human relics buried in leaves and earth.

But the fixture stubbornly shines as the last reminder humanity existed.

Tonight, a troop of baboons sees its glow.

It reminds the elders of the zoo they escaped.

They keel it over

and the light goes out.
