As the cocaine is laid out, Aubrey’s arms hang heavy.
She’s tried so many times to quit.
She can’t! It’s too much for her. It’s the family curse at work.
Her turn to snort, Aubrey closes her eyes.
She’s chained to her meth-head father,
who is chained to his alcoholic mother.
This has gone on for generations—since the beginning of time.
“Aubrey, you ready?”
“No.” She swears she hears the breaking of chains as she stands.
Aubrey walks home with the help of her ancestors.
In her sobriety, they’re all free.
