Flash Fiction #199 – Two Women on the Same Subway Train: November 1954

A curvy brunette in a mink coat barely enters the train in time.

Outside, a man snaps photos of her as it pulls away.

A petite lady in jeans and her own oversized glasses invites her to sit down.

They bond over their shared experiences of unwanted attention,

love for children and animals,

secret heartaches,

and even discover they both feel inadequate and undeserving of love.

Neither has ever felt so seen.

And yet Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn depart as strangers,

fearing their names will ruin everything.
