Flash Fiction #332 – Punching In

Everyone expected Miles to take the promotion; instead, he quit.

The single father fired the nannies, spending his days cheerfully making school lunches, driving the kids, volunteering at every game and recital.

The neighborhood took pity. “Midlife crisis,” they said.

But with bills piling up and Miles refusing to work, a new consensus emerged: “Miles was a loser.”

As the asteroid darkens the sky, Miles hugs his children one last time.

He pities his screaming neighbors. If only they, too, had the premonition. “Knowing when the world will end really puts life into perspective.”
