Flash Fiction #281 – Soulmates

At the grocery store, Lilac and Brutus grab the same apple.

Fingers touch.

Warm shivers run up their arms.

“Do I know you?” asks Brutus, staring into Lilac’s eyes.

The answer is yes. In 1596 Germany, she had Brutus, then a woman, burned as a witch.

In France in 1793, he, her executioner, returned the favor by chopping off her head.

During the American Civil War in 1862, they both shot each other dead.

Now in 2024, they hold the apple, staring at each other dreamily. “We must be soulmates,” Lilac answers.
